What You Think You Need to Do for a Portrait Session (But Actually Don’t)

share

Let’s be honest—preparing for a portrait session can feel like prepping for the Met Gala. Somewhere along the way, we convinced ourselves that if we’re not flawless from head to toe, we might as well reschedule. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to do half the things you think you do.

So before you stress over a last-minute beauty appointment, let’s break down what you actually don’t have to do.

1. You Don’t Have to Get Your Hair Done—Wear a Wig or Get Braids Instead

If you have time to get a fresh style, go for it! But if life is life-ing, don’t stress. A wig or braids can save the day without the salon trip. Just make sure your hair is styled in a way that makes you feel good—whether that’s a lace front laid to perfection or some fresh knotless braids that’ll last long after the session. PS – Nadines is 24/7 and they provide hair. You’re welcome.

2. You Don’t Have to Get a Full Mani and Pedi

We get it—not everyone has time to sit in the nail salon for hours. Skip the full set and focus on what actually shows. If your toes will be out, get a pedi. For your hands, a quick buff or a set of press-ons will do the trick.

3. You Don’t Have to Lose 5 Pounds First—You Look Amazing Right Now

If you’re waiting to “tone up” before booking a session, stop right there. The version of you that exists right now is the one that deserves to be celebrated. Your photographer (me!) knows how to pose you in ways that flatter your natural shape, and most importantly—you are already beautiful exactly as you are.

4. You Don’t Have to Wait for the “Right Time”

Waiting for the “perfect” moment to book a portrait session is like waiting for the stars to align—it’s never going to feel just right. Life is always busy, and there will always be something that feels like it needs to be done first. But guess what? The right time is whenever you decide to honor yourself. Don’t wait until you have more time, more confidence, or more “perfection.” The best time to celebrate yourself is right now.

5. You Don’t Have to Buy a New Outfit—You Already Have Something Perfect

Think you have nothing to wear? Think again. I guarantee there’s something in your closet that is perfect for your session. A simple dress? Classic. Jeans with a sexy blouse? Timeless. The key is to wear something you feel good in—not something brand new, not something trendy, just something that feels like YOU.

And if you still don’t love anything in your wardrobe, don’t stress—we provide a curated wardrobe from our studio collection to help you look and feel amazing. Whether you want something elegant, bold, or minimal, we have pieces that will flatter and photograph beautifully.

Bottom Line: Show Up as YOU

The whole point of a portrait session is to celebrate you as you are—not the version of you that’s overly polished, stressfully prepared, or filtered into someone unrecognizable. So let go of the pressure, book the session, and step into your spotlight, exactly as you are.
