Photography is more than just what I do—it’s how I tell stories, honor legacies, and create space for people to see themselves in a new light. But if you’ve followed my work, you may have noticed something: I don’t use the words “shoot” or “photoshoot.”
It’s not an accident. It’s intentional.
Why Words Matter
In today’s world, language carries weight. The word shoot may seem harmless in the photography world, but outside of that bubble, it holds a very different meaning. In a time when gun violence disproportionately affects Black communities, and when encounters with law enforcement can turn dangerous in an instant, casually throwing around that word feels tone-deaf.
For me, it’s not just about being mindful—it’s personal.
The Day I Knew I Had to Change My Language
Several years ago, I was pulled over by Howard County police on my way to a cover a late night party. I had my purse in the trunk, and when the officer asked, “Where are you headed?” (which, honestly, why is that even their business?), I started to answer without thinking.
“I’m headed to a sh—”
I stopped myself just in time.
Because at that moment, two officers, with guns drawn, were walking me toward my trunk. Even though I knew I wasn’t a threat, I couldn’t risk being misunderstood. I quickly clarified—I’m a photographer, I have a party to cover—but the entire situation reminded me that we don’t always get the benefit of the doubt. And I refuse to take that chance with my words.
Reframing the Language of Photography
That experience changed the way I talk about my work. Now, I use words that center creativity and intention rather than violent connotations. I offer portrait sessions, experiences, collections and creative storytelling. Because that’s what photography truly is—an experience, a moment, a story being told forever.
I share this because words matter. Language matters. And in a world that already asks Black people to be hyperaware of how we move, how we speak, and how we’re perceived, I choose to be intentional in ways that align with who I am and what I stand for.
So no, we won’t have “shoots.” Together, we’ll create beautiful imagery and portraits during our sessions. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
